Give Us This Day…
“Yesterday’s bread is not transferable.”
I almost shouted. The Lord’s Prayer goes like this:
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever.
Amen.
I taught both of my children this prayer at an early age.
The part that is jumping out to me today is “give us this day our daily bread.” DAILY. As in…we need Jesus daily. He is our bread. At the Last Supper he took bread, broke it, blessed it and said, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” We take communion in remembrance of this very same thing.
I think that a lot of people think that believing in God is enough…or that because they got baptized way back when, they can live however they want…I’ve quite literally heard someone say that “God is going to have to grade me on a curve,” and that’s just not right.
Following Jesus is a DAILY choice. Sure, He knows we will stumble, but we have to get back up and keep going. That’s why I choose to listen to gospel music, that’s why I (re)started this blog, that’s why I pray and talk to Jesus every single day…because I know that I need Him EVERY SINGLE DAY. Our flesh is weak, but if we fill ourselves with His word, it will make our days much more precious and pleasant.
After all, if we expect to spend eternity with Him in heaven, we have to first spend time with Him here on earth!
